When Imran Says Change, It Resonates

From the Blog pkhope Every time has its slogan. A slogan which synchronizes with the aspiration of the people, is terse, simple, and easily memorizable is what wins the hearts and minds of people. Roti,Kapra, aur Makan did that magic for Bhutto, Change did that for Obama in US, and Change slogan of Imran Khan is making its solid mark at least in Punjab and KPK. This Change slogan may not put Imran Khan in the hot seat in Islamabad, but it would certainly enable him to be a very serious player in Pakistani politics for a long time to come. This change slogan of Imran will get him the ruling seat if he remains passionate and steadfast. He has already replaced the PPP as the second choice and bidding his chances directly against the PML-N. Fashion Feature : Bright Young Thing, Mahgul for Nasreen Shaikh

From the Blog siddysays Nothing excites me more than Pret a Porter! So when Nasreen Sheikh, the Veteran designer announced her Ready to Wear line 'Mahgul for Nasreen Sheikh' it almost immediately clicked. Nasreen herself has now been a class couturier for over 2 decades and her granddaughter Mahgul's debut collection appears after 6 years of apprenticeship at the design house! Mahgul's collection is all set to be showcased in the emerging designers category. The 'Archive' Collection draws inspiration from old photographs and weaves them into modern wearable pieces. What we do know of the collection right now is that it is Monochromatic (Spot on Trend!!). Mahgul herself is a fine artist so I'm dying to see how she translates that into her clothes. The 99s in Karachi

From the Blog borderlinegreen The Karachi test of 1973 arrived and could not have done so sooner. It was the first international match at the National Stadium in over 2 years. In the previous match of the series, at Niaz Stadium Hyderabad, Greig and Knott had batted almost two sessions to save England on the last day. We all had felt very frustrated to see England escape once more. To us luck was a rare commodity. We had been waiting for victory since Oval 1954. So anticipation was high for the 3rd test of the series. The pitch, as is often the case in Karachi, was bare and dead. One looked at it and said runs. Majid (Captain) sent Pakistan in and Sadiq and Talat gave a good start. Later Majid and Sadiq (89), and then Majid and Mushtaq carried Pakistan to a good score. QUR'AN ANTHOLOGIES: Illuminating Metaphors – By Type III

From the Blog structureofentropy Conventional metaphors have probably always existed. Many new words or sense-meanings have arisen when old words were metaphorically extended to new ideas/situations. Metaphors hidden in the roots (etymologies) of words are usually labelled as dead metaphors. Their metaphoric imagery is not as vivid, as alive as more regular or novel metaphors. However, understanding them might help understand the role they play in fresh metaphors. *Etymology of a word* The roots of language are irrational and of a magical nature. ___ Jorge Luis Borges↓1 Etymology is the study of the history of words, their origins, and how their form and meaning have changed over time. Birthdays and new years – as clichéd as it may sound – are indeed the best times for self-reflection! You can take stock of what has happened in the past years, and you can only hope for better roads leading to your future! Sublime and Sinister

From the Blog awaisaftabThere is a spiritual impulse in humans, to seek meaning and transcendent value, and it can manifest as a humble and sublime philosophy... At the same time, there is a rabid religious impulse, steeped in dogma, which takes the former impulse hostage and suffocates it. Religion is both sublime and sinister, because man is both sublime and sinister. No religion that is blind to its own darkness can hope to transcend it. Blindness, unfortunately, comes all too easy. The world is steeped in ignorance and well-meaning individuals striving to change that are prone to forget their own submersion in the same. The world is too certain and too far from truth. It is too certain in its assertions and its negations. It needs more self-doubt. This intellectual humility, however, is a virtue, pakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

Fathers and Sons and Chechnya

From the Blog pakistanisforpeace By Juan Cole for Informed Comment [image: dagestan] The anger and embarrassment visible in the interviews given on Friday by the uncle and the aunt of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the alleged Boston Marathon bombers, are entirely understandable. But I see clues here to family dynamics that may be important in understanding what happened. In Ivan Turgenev's 1862, novel, "Fathers and Sons," the old man's son, Arkady, comes back home after studies with a friend, Bazarov, after both had adopted the radical philosophy of Nihilism. Their radicalism roiled the family for a while, until Bazarov's death. (Later, in 1881, Nihilists assassinated Tsar Alexander II). The key back in 2013, I think, is Maret Tsarnaeva's assertion that the father, Anzor, 'worked in the enforcement agenpakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

Ahistoricism and Reform

From the Blog awaisaftabAs far as I can assess, Islam - when seen in terms of its historical origin and development - isn't quite as intolerant as extremists would like it to be, nor quite as liberal as liberal Muslims would like it to be. In this sense, both are guilty of ahistoricism. Both wish to uphold respectively idealized versions that do not correspond well with what history has to offer, and resultantly, the history is either distorted or conveniently ignored. 'Moderates' are probably more in line in terms of the *severity*of beliefs, but the moral zeitgeist has evolved significantly, so much so that this 'moderate' stance is no longer ethically justifiable. The liberals are on the 'right side of history' as far as their ethical direction is concerned, but I do not think that any authentic theolpakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

From the Blog affanaali [image: Image] Yesterday afternoon some of my colleagues including me were arguing about something. That turned to relationships, and then to the pros and cons of love marriages and arrange marriages. The conclusion was "love is Blind" and therefore majority of the love marriages does not last long and ends up in divorce. Does all that make sense? Surely, all those who say this are completely clueless about what they are saying and why they are saying this. To say "Love is Blind" is completely unjustified. Love sees more not less, Love sees beyond what a normal sight can see. Those who say it are clueless of what they are saying, when we say Love is Blind, it does not actually mean love; what it actually refer to is "Selfishness". Ensure electoral transparency and accountability

From the Blog paknews [image: electoral transparency]Every five years or so, Pakistanis vote in elections that tend to reopen old, festering economic, and ethnic and religious wounds. The upcoming May 11 parliamentary election is taking place against the background of bloodshed and carnage, which is more about politics of mud throwing on others than ideologies or policies. Most main-stream parties have already kicked-off their campaigns, but we won't be seeing many faces changing. The situation in the country is unstable moving backwards instead of going forward. Because of poor security situation in the country it would be difficult to organize campaign. The stakes this year are especially high following the disastrous 2008 poll, which unleashed a pre-electoral bloodbath. Bloodshed and violence is pakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

Fall of PTI

From the Blog pkhope When Haroon Rasheed and Hassan Nisar start their utter disappointment, sheer anguish, and extreme anger regarding the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf and literally start questioning the sagacity and foresight of its leader Imran Khan, then it means that things are really bad, very bad with the PTI. The barometer of media is also not showing that open love for the head honcho of Tehrik-e-Insaaf and he has virtually disappeared from the media screens and has been replaced by the former president Pervaiz Musharraf. PTI has been replaced by the APML spokespersons and defenders in the TV talkshows and instead of Inam ullah Niazi, you would see Ahmad Raza Kasuri fighting with the PML-N these days. A Perfect Misfit

From the Blog jamash I have always been a total misfit for the society I belong to, some events of the past few months made me ponder a little and I realized how different , difficult and different I am from the rest of the world and why. I have been brought up inspired by the stories like of my great grandfather who once gave shalter to an eloped couple, giving his quilt and bed to them and staying up and awake all night long shivering in the winters. Stories of my grand mother and another distant relative of hers who dispite of living in a tiny hut used to to present the little food in their house to the guests while they starved themselves. How they gave their little precious belongings to whoever liked them. the stories of my grandfather who always went out of the way to help others, he workepakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

Musharraf's party urges army to intervene: Another test case of Pakistani civil society

From the Blog united4justice It seems Musharraf's gang is doing what is expected from them. They are willing to risk the whole country to save former military dictator, General (R) Musharraf. According to media reports, his crony and former DG ISPR General (R) Rashid Qureshi has urged army to intervene for protecting the former Pentagon pet dictator. If army intervenes then the next Long March and Dharna should be at GHQ where the real evil resides. We support Justice Iftikhar Chaudhary and Supreme Court of Pakistan. Insha Allah all the efforts and plans of these evil criminal minded satans will fail as Allah is the best of planners not them. I think APML should be called as Anti-Pakistan Musharraf League instead of All Pakistan Muslim League. Bringing Change

From the Blog pakteahouse By Kashif Ali During the election campaign, the favorite most mantra of every politician seems to be: "bring change". This mantra is international in its appeal and you can use it anywhere in the world. You can be a new and emerging leader, or an old one, you just have to use this statement to fool the public. But does simple repeating the mantra really bring the purported change? NO!! is my answer. You choose yours. I would like to share a personal experience. During my lunch with Warren Buffett, I asked him a very important question: "Buffett, if you have to change Pakistan, what would you do?" He looked at me for few minutes, laughed and said: "Kashif, I cannot do anything for Pakistan" To this I retorted: "You have invested billions in China and in many other countripakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

What do brands discuss on social media?

From the Blog hammadsiddiquiblog What do brands discuss on social media? Fools are those who use social media for marketing! Strong statement, isn't it? People are already pushed too much by TV commercials for purchasing goods they often do not need. If social media is used in the same manner, audience will switch the page the way they switch the channel as soon as adverts appear. Think about yourself, how many times did you purchase goods just by watching TV adverts? Social media is a different type of engagement. It has created a new avenue for brands to engage their customers effectively. Brands have learnt using this new media for promoting brands through customers who love them. They help build brand equity, tell people how they feel about a product or services, and with this instead of using the push pakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

On the big day the Japanese won by a mile. Afterward, the American team became discouraged and depressed. American management decided the reason for the crushing defeat had to be found. A management team made up of senior managers was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action. Their conclusion was the Japanese had eight people rowing and one person steering, while the American team had eight people steering and one person rowing. So American management hired a consulting company and paid them an incredible sum. Camus: An Almost-Christian?

From the Blog awaisaftabThe prospect that Albert Camus may have been considering converting to Christianity in the years before his death is something that makes me very uneasy, as an avid admirer (though not necessarily a subscriber) of his philosophy of the absurd. The dubious information comes to us from a memoir written by Howard Mumma, an American minister in the United Church of America, narrating his private conversations with Camus. This has been well reviewed in this article 'The outsider who almost came in' by Greg Clarke, which I would recommend the readers to go through. It is unlikely, to my mind, that Mumma would have made the whole thing up. I am inclined to believe there is *some* truth to it, but I am sure Mumma has inadvertently projected his own eagerness onto Camus and has reconstrucpakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

From change to change, I know this change

From the Blog pkhope A short paragraph interested me in the book titled "The American Political Process" by Alan Grant. Here it is: 'There have been over 5000 suggested amendments to the Constitution introduced in Congress since 1787, but less than 40 have been submitted to the states and only twenty-seven have actually been ratified [by 1994].' Let me tell what is interesting in it. Making amendments in the constitution is the only way to have desired 'change' in today's any democratic society, where parliament is supreme. Here in Pakistan, Islamic movements or political parties which want Islamic rule in the country often pose this argument that by becoming part of any democratic system they can bring in the 'desired' change. What I found lame about this rationale of Islamic political parties pakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

From the Blog iabhopal Part-1, Mentality and Struggle and Part-2, Martin L King & Gandhi can be read by clicking on the topics The claim that Gandhi won freedom for India peacefully without shedding a drop of blood is the biggest fabricated lie of the 20th century. Up to the start of World War II, the British government categorically rejected the demand for the independence of India in the immediate future. However, the situation changed dramatically after the war. The war was so devastating to the British power that their government found it impossible to build the infra structure and economy of the homeland while coping with the growing national liberation movements in the colonies. The British government wisely decided to grant freedom to its colonies. It wasn't Gandhi's movement which drove the pakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

It reaches 28250 ft (8,611 meters), and lies partly in china and partly in the Pakistani-administered region of Kashmir. In 1954 the Italians Achille Comagnoni and Line Lacedell become the first climbers to reach its summit. The glacier and snow-covered mountain rises from its base at about 15000 ft on the Godwin Austen Glacier, a tributary of the Baltoro Glacier. The first woman who reached the summit was Wanda Rutkiewicz of Poland, in 1986. Nanga Parbat Picture *Nanga Parbatpakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

It's all about balls..

From the Blog jamash There are two kind of humans on this planet (which is like a playground ), one who are people and the others who have balls; I mean who are Balls. The ball(s) sit in the center, (of the playground of course), happy to be surrounded by the people, the ball likes to have all the attending people give to it and it thinks they are in love with it until the whistle blows and the game begins . If it's match of football, rugby or hockey, the ball is suddenly approached from all sides , Its eyes bulge out our of excitement that humans have finally decided to accept it as one of them , but a ball is a ball and nothing more or less than a ball. There is a reason balls are also called nuts, because they are nuts, totally crazy and brainless nuts, don't they look at them selves !, they pakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

Boston's Largest Mosque: 'We're Bostonians — We Mourn With The City'

From the Blog pakistanisforpeace By Shahien Nasiripour for The Huffington Post [image: Image] Security officials at Boston's largest mosque requested police to guard its campus in the wake of Monday's deadly explosions at the Boston Marathon, a sobering reminder that Muslims in the U.S. often face threats after alleged terrorist attacks. But if the pair of city police officers parked outside the mosque conveyed a message of heightened alert, workers inside the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center were too busy to notice. There, a small staff spent Tuesday morning working with religious leaders from various faiths across the city to launch an interfaith prayer event to memorialize the attack's victims, while offering city and state officials all the resources the mosque could muster.
