“You Start Dying Slowly If…” by Pablo Neruda

From the Blog powerofthought I read this inspirational poem today and had to share it with you: *You start dying slowly* *By Pablo Neruda* You start dying slowly If you do not travel, If you do not read, If you do not listen to the sounds of life, If you do not appreciate yourself. You start dying slowly When you kill your self-esteem; When you do not let others help you. You start dying slowly If you become a slave of your habits, Walking everyday on the same paths… If you do not change your routine, If you do not wear different colors Or you do not speak to those you don’t know. You start dying slowly If you avoid to feel passion And their turbulent emotions; Those which make your eyes glisten And your heart beat fast. You start dying slowly If you do not change your life when you are not satisfied with pakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

Reclaiming lost space

From the Blog mehmalLyse Doucet, BBC’s chief international correspondent, wrote a very nice piece on the Lahore Literary Festival (LLF) recently. The headline said: “Book lovers defy the bombers”. While it is literally true that despite real security threats, people still thronged the LLF, it also reminds one of how there are not enough events to celebrate literature, art and culture in Pakistan. Most of us do not like it when people say we are defying bombers or the Taliban by holding such events, or that we are a resilient nation. Yes, it may be literally true, but then again, we also know that we cannot escape bombs and bullets so we may as well make the most of our lives while we are at it. This is why the Karachi Literature Festival (KLF) and the LLF are events that people look forward to attenpakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

میزبانوں کا مقابلہ، صلاحیتوں کا حقیقی امتحان

From the Blog cricnama

Pakistan Launches World's Largest and Fastest Biometric Data Collection Effort

From the Blog riazhaqPakistan has started verifying identities of over 135 million cell phone users through fingerprints. The massive exercise is being described by Washington Post as the "world’s largest — and fastest — efforts to collect biometric information". The deadline for completion in March 14, 2015. Several countries, including South Africa and India, have recently implemented broad systems for collecting and storing their citizens biometric information. But analysts and communications experts say they can’t recall a country trying to gather biometrics as rapidly as Pakistan is doing, according to the Washington-based American newspaper. Murder of Rationality

From the Blog pakteahouse [image: Roy] *Raza Habib Raja* Bangladesh and Pakistan are similar and yet different. They are similar as both of them are Muslim countries and both have Islamists in their midst. And yet they are different as the latter is definitely more embroiled in Islamic extremism than the former. Bangladesh to be fair is a more moderate country compared to Pakistan. And this moderation owes to many factors. Bengalis are foremost nationalists and this characteristic to some extent acts as a counter balance to emergence and possible dominance of Islamic identity. Moreover Bangladesh is also ethnically more homogeneous compared to Pakistan which naturally reduces the need to use Islam as a “unifying force”. Bangladesh’s creation and the justifying narrative are based on ethnicity and conpakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

February Favourites '15

From the Blog jasminecatchesbutterflies February is one of my favourite months as around this time of the year we welcome spring and the weather is just pleasant. Now, that February is ending, I am a wee bit upset because the city will soon heat up and I will also get busier with my academics until summer vacations in late June. Anyhow, that is a never ending rant so go ahead and check out my edition of top favourites for the month of February. *1) Dove Nourishing Oil Care Conditioner* If you have been sticking around for long enough, you might know that Dove conditioners are my absolute favourites. Unfortunately, out of print in Britain there are only a few copies of this book to be found in Pakistan; one in the Railway Headquarters of Lahore and the other in the library of the Department of Archaeology at Karachi. The destroyed bridge at Tanduri Berridge notes that the story of the construction of the line to Quetta has ‘no parallel in the whole of the history of the railways in India.’ Among other things, he tells us, it was the exemplary courage and fortitude of the engineers and ordinary labourers agpakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

India Rising? Pakistan Rapidly Collapsing?

From the Blog riazhaqIs it true that "India is rising and Pakistan is rapidly collapsing", the currently accepted western narrative recently re-iterated by Roger Cohen in his New York Times Op Ed from Lahore, Pakistan? Let's examine it by reviewing reports filed by several Indian journalists after their recent visits to Pakistan: *"India is a democracy and a great power rising. Pakistan is a Muslim homeland that lost half its territory in 1971, bounced back and forth between military and nominally democratic rule, never quite clear of annihilation angst despite its nuclear weapons".* Roger Cohen's New York Times Op Ed "Pakistan in Its Labyrinth" *"I.. saw much in this recent visit (to Pakistan) that did not conform to the main Western narrative for South Asia -- one in which India is steadily risipakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

A Random Thought

From the Blog jamash At times i wish i would have nothing to do with this country, and we are not trees that we’d be rooted to a piece of blood soaked land. We are just humans, only a few of us still alive in this blood thirsty piece of land, for how long, may be we will bring hope, or maybe we will also abandon this land of pure. Pure, so pure that no human can live to the standards of its purity, inhumanely pure, the brilliants of the all brilliant white, whiter than any shroud, and the green the greenest any grass or plant can achieve, the unachievable standard of purity …. pakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

Sisterhood of the World Tag

From the Blog jasminecatchesbutterflies I have been tagged THRICE by now to answer a total of THIRTY questions for the Sisterhood of the World Tag and before I end up collecting any more, I better answer! ;) The first person to tag me was *Noor* from *Noor's Place* and here's what she was curious to know! ;) [image: Pinterest] *Q1: If you could leave tomorrow with a one-way ticket, where would you go?* *Ans 1:* Boy, oh boy! I can't choose this easily because I am always big on travelling! Though what instantly popped in my head was 'Paris', I would actually go to Turkey if I'm never to return. *Q2: What's on the top of your wish list right now? and why?* *Ans 2: *Again, I wanted to say some sort of makeup but I would much rather wisely say a DSLR. Ode.

From the Blog randomlyabstract To pencils, who have always stayed by man’s side enabling expression of emotions and their extermination. The pencils which, whine not whence you need them at two in the morning or say four, sleep not without you safely tucked in bed. Pencils that die inch by inch, tending an artist’s turmoil or a writer’s ruckus with a smoke of grey or graphite crushed, and designs– oh such! Pencils. Do you see not how they aid an ailing heart, a studious kid, a busy clerk? Out on paper, they run until you’re tired resting only in your nearest drawer after work. A new realism

From the Blog pakteahouse *by Saad Hafiz* [image: modiobama] President Obama’s recent visit to India, while ignoring Pakistan, is being seen as a “diplomatic failure of Islamabad”. Failure or not, the visit does warrant a review of the effectiveness of Pakistan’s foreign policy given the changing nature of a state and the realities of the international scene. Generally speaking, a country’s foreign policy is the face that it presents to the rest of the world and should, therefore, be based on a unified vision of the national interest. In foreign policy terms, one good definition of vital national interests is those “conditions that are strictly necessary to safeguard and enhance the well-being of the people in a free and secure nation”. Those with wings…

From the Blog randomlyabstract Like her, the park is lonely and the air is sick. It smells of stale roses and untreated promises; and the swing on which she sits squeaks a song so pathetically sad it almost makes time stop– and time, like some humans, knows less when it’s better to instead tread quickly. The grass below is wet with dew, as are her fingers which she continually bring to her face to wipe away the watery signs of fragility and brokenness. From somewhere far, a beautiful sparrow descends and stops right where she is, to fly to and fro. Distracted by the sudden chirrup, she looks at her new companion and smiles. “Will you stay, birdie?” she asks– only to remember that wings always fly… Written in response to today’s prose-poetry prompt: “fingers” (also goes for “cut off“) Filed under: 2015, pakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

After the adventure, she left the country by way of Makran in whose waterless and desolate wastes she lost her entire force, save 20 men. Three hundred years later, Cyrus the Great, the Achaemenian king of Persia, duplicated the same feat. He was even less fortunate being able to lead away just seven of his great army to safety. In 325 BCE, Alexander’s choice of exit from India was guided by word of the disastrous marches of these two earlier monarchs. Nothing there, either. Not even on the ‘fair and balanced’ Fox News or our own Al Jazeera. In fact, the news about the shooting of the family of three, Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, his wife, Yusor Mohammed, 21, and her sister, Razan Mohammad, 19, all students of North Carolina University, in their home trickled down on wires much later. In life more than in death!

From the Blog shaistathinks Of late my social media timeline has been full of people writing in the memory of their loved ones they have lost recently. Some writing poetic lines for their friends, some for their family. It got me thinking – I wonder when was the last time they met or spoke to that person? Do we, in our lifetime apologize to those we hurt? Do we tell the ones we love how much we love them? And when we are aching to speak to someone, do we reach out to them? In the rush of our maddening lives, often times we tread upon those we care for most. There will always be time to make up, we might think. Life is so fragile and unpredictable, there may not be anytime! I would rather that my friends and family care for me while I am alive. I try and do the same for the ones who mean most to me. From the Blog tanveerrauf [image: climate_solutions_fewer_children_rtr25xz7_ah_55004] Islam does not oppose family planning at all, rather directs to devise a strategy and planning in this field too like all other fields. God has made a code of conduct for the smooth running of this world. Thus all the works, accordingly get accomplished in two ways. *The first way* is beyond the capacity of human beings as in the matters of rains, storms, floods, earthquakes, changing of seasons, and the natural calamities etc. *The second way* has the partial involvement of the human being's will and action. In all of the matters which a human being considers to be in his capacity, God has directed him to undertake them with knowledge, rational thinking, intellect, wisdom and proper strategy. Babylon

From the Blog shahzebnajam *next door the lovemaking subsides stars fall from other worlds — anonymous * There was the time I found that old laptop in the attic and I asked and I asked but no one knew where it came from. It was dusty and slow — Windows 95 and all that — and inside were stories written by a sixteen-year-old girl called Elizabeth. The stories were about heartache. The stories were about young love. The stories were about moving to New York and being an artist and living in a small apartment that looks over Central Park, watching the sun set on another day and you; you that much closer to the truth. It was the sort of stuff young girls called Elizabeth write about. They were not particularly well written. They weren’t Hemingway. They weren’t Márquez. They certainly weren’t Jack Gilberpakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

Translations of the Quran

From the Blog sakibahmadThe Quran is divine in origin. The way Classical Arabic of the 7th century (as used by the Quraysh tribe of Makkah) has been employed in the Quran is unique. As the values and principles described in the Quran embrace all aspects of human existence - physical, intellectual, moral, spiritual - the Quran uses sublime, semi-poetical language to transcend the limitation of words, in places introducing its own semantics. Too many translators of the Quran fail to grasp the idioms and expressions used in 7th century Makkah and produce literal translations which make little sense, the original meaning and beauty of the Quran lost in the translation. Apart from outright distortion this allows emphases and nuances to creep into the translation which were not in the original. It is said tpakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

H is for Heme

From the Blog the-emo-wolverine-writesAssalamuAlaikum ^^ Only one week has passed since this new module but I've had some great experiences! We had three practicals this week and all three of them were very interesting. Apart from that, I think I can safely diagnose someone who has *jaundice **-* (this may sound really ridiculous to you, cause jaundice is such an obvious looking sort of disease, but hold right there! Jaundice is of two types! And it's important to know which type you're dealing with!) The first practical I had was called "hemoglobin estimation" where you basically take a sample of blood and *hemolyse *it. To hemolyse, or hemolysis is when you break down the membrane of the red blood cells so the hemoglobin can come out and react with the acid, changing the color of the solution from red to brown. Advertisement and Digital Media

From the Blog lahoreschoolofeconomics The Marketing Society of the Lahore School invited Mr. Adeel Hashmi and Mr. Daud Randle to talk to the students about Advertisement and Digital Media on 13 February 2015. A large number of students both MBA and undergraduates welcomed the guests and listened to them with attention. Adeel Hashmi, a famous Pakistani television actor, social worker, producer and screen writer, and brand ambassador for Ufone, spoke for about 70 minutes and won over the audience with his natural style of speaking and his sparkling wit and sense of humor. He advised the audience to also be mindful about the negative aspects of advertising as some ads promoted wasteful expenditure. 1999 - the year I stopped watching cricket

From the Blog beanbagtalesI was in Karachi in 1999, preparing for my IBA entrance test which meant that I had ample time on my hands to watch ALL the matches of the Cricket World Cup. I was at my grandmother's house and with all cousins over for holidays there was a big, festive gathering which sat down to watch each match. Over tea, snacks and Cadbury fruit and nut chocolate, we discussed the merits of our team versus the rest of the world. And what a team it was! A solid fast pace 'killer' bowling attack in the form of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar, Azhar Mahmood, and Abdur Razzaq. And an equally solid spin attack with the veteran Mushtaq Ahmed and the spin maestro & pioneer of 'doosra', Saqlain Mushtaq. Moin Khan was the perfect keeper. Pakistan Won 1992 World Cup After Losing to India and West Indies

From the Blog riazhaqPakistan cricket team has drawn widespread derision after performing miserably in its first two matches of World Cup 2015. Many Pakistanis are understandably very angry at the top batting order that fell like flies to create a new world record of the loss of 4 wickets in the first few minutes of the match against West Indies with the score stuck at 1 run. While I agree with much of the criticism of the Pakistan cricket team for its poor performance seen so far, I do think the hysteria is unnecessary. All we have to do is to look at the history of Pakistan's performance in the 1992 World Cup which Pakistan won. Like the 2015 World Cup, the 1992 Cricket World Cup was hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Before going on to win the1992 World Cup, Pakistan lost badly to three teampakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments
