Being a Working Mom is TOUGH! I love it anyway.

I would cry during the commute each way, cursing the traffic, thinking desperately that those precious minutes could have been spent with my baby. The baby in question is 3 years old now. I am still a full-time working mother while also serving as the Associate Editor of a literary publication. I do not cry in traffic now, but I still curse. Loudly. Unabashedly. It's good for the soul. And the moment after a curse word rebounds from the car's interior and disappears into the air is so....well, zen. Maxi Dress

From the Blog ummeyusufOn one of my recent excursions to our local yarn store, I bought a couple of skeins of variegated yarn. I planned to do something spectacular with them, only to realize later, that it is hard to pick the right pattern for this kind of yarn. Anyway, the first skein turned into this baby cardigan. For the second skein, I did a bit of deliberation and search, before settling on the Maxi Top/Dress pattern. Luckily, I had a right shade of contrasting yarn in my stash. I am so glad I picked this pattern. It was such a fun knit, quick and easy to boot. And the final dress came out quite nice. I would recommend this pattern to all knitters who have a little girl to knit for. This dress is for my second daughter. I knit the 4/5 size, so it has some ease on the 3.5 year old. The Price of Love

French Chocolate Macarons

Macarons look so delicate and elegant that I thought it would be very hard to make them. Macarons are very technical. Making macarons involves whipping up egg whites to the right stiffness, removing any clumps from the dry ingredients, then folding the dry ingredients with a very light hand and achieving the right consistency of the batter. A good macaron has beautiful feet, and is crunchy on the outside. Macarons aren't just cooked, but are actually dehydrated to form a beautiful cookie. There are some guidlelines to follow when making macarons. The macarons, after piping on the parchment paper, need to be rested for some time. Expedition Trail 6

From the Blog the-emo-wolverine-writes Trail 6: one of the many man-made trails made for tourists to scale the sides of the Margalla Mountains located outside of Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. Situated between the beautiful Faisal Mosque and the scenic mountains, the trail has it's own parking lot which is closed off and on a Sunday with lovely weather, is a perfect cricket ground for visitors. Trail visitors are greeted by trees planted in memory of individuals of the Marker family (whoever the heck they are) followed by a Visitor's Information Center and a sitting area with swings and a bird watch tower (which looks more like a small tree house). Whenever I put on a guard and try and write the perfect sentence or try and come up with the perfect topic, I end up a) either not writing or b) writing the most boring stuff or c) putting up a quote on the blog. And whenever a, b or c happens, I know I'm not writing for myself. I went over my blog entries from the beginning (Nov 2009) and noticed a gradual change in the posts. What I'd love to write here is that the quality of my posts, both in terms of content and writing style, has improved manifold but the truth is far from that. From the Blog riazhaqAnxious wait turned to pure joy as my daughter Amber gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby boy in San Francisco after a prolonged labor last weekend. The arrival of my first grandchild was a very exciting moment for all of us and our son-in-law Glenn's brothers and parents. Soon after normal delivery, Yasmeen, Michelle and I rushed to the hospital room to hold the baby and smiled and cooed at him with excitement. He was comfortably swaddled in a soft, warm flannel blanket patterned with pink and blue baby footprints. A quick look at the tag revealed that the blanket was made in Pakistan. As we decided to share the unique happy moment through pictures with our global family and friends, the obvious choice to reach most of them was via Facebook.
