Econothon

From the Blog lahoreschoolofeconomics Lahore School Economics Society organized the first ever Economics Quiz Competition 'Econothon'. The competition consisted of three rounds in which the teams were evaluated on the basic knowledge of economics. First round consisted of 37 teams out of which top 10 teams qualified for round 2. Top 5 teams from round 2 qualified for round 3. The society received an overwhelming response from the student body for organizing an interactive event that was different from the events organized in the past. The competition was judged by Dr Azam Chaudhry (Dean of Economics Department), Dr Waqar Wadho (Assistant Professor and Senior Research Fellow) and Ms Shamyla Chaudhry (Assistant Professor). This annual practice has been in place since two thousand and nine. In one sense it is as familiar as the end of the year editions of news and print. December is as much the month of looking backward as it is forward. This is inherent in the proliferation of articles, lists and notes on the year in review. I have my particular favourites like Popova’s the best of Brain Pickings. In addition, I have a virtual collection of articles of note as well as lines and phrases scribbled in notebooks. I find this to be an extension of dog-eared pages in much loved books. It is a way to capture words and visuals that inspire. a new year post - sort of

Fireworks are nice but in Karachi the fireworks can be lifetaking so it's much safer to stay indoors and just watch the celebrations in different parts of the world on television. I think I've not been to a single new year celebration party in the past ten years. In fact, come to think of it, I can actually count the number of such celebrations I've attended in the past 35 years on my fingertips! [I'm still not sure if that's cool or not]. While counting the various celebrations on my fingertips just now, one particular party stood out. I think it was in 1993 probably. Both of them used to fuss about not celebrating birthdays at ‘their age’ and yet when my siblings and I bought them cards and presents and sang Happy Birthday, one could see the pleasure in their eyes and in their faces knowing that they were loved and appreciated. As I sit here this morning, I feel extremely lonely because there is no-one to fuss over, no-one to buy flowers for, to make a special meal for, to buy lavish gifts for. But seasonal illnesses took most of December away from me and I was only able to really knit during the last week. Still, I cannot help but be thrilled about being able to post a FO (finished object) on the first day of the new year. Especially, since it means that I have finally finished a project that I started in October 2014, and that I was mostly successful in getting it done by the end of December (It was all done except the neckband). You can tell by the length of time it was on the needles, that it was not an easy project. Like all knitting project for men, it took too long to grow. The cables slowed the knitting even further. PTA hosts WLL Spectrum auction for Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan

From the Blog smartchoice This Tuesday, Pakistan Telecommunications Authority(PTA) held a spectrum auction at their headquarters for Wireless Local Loop(WLL) services in Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan. Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd(PTCL) and LinkDotNet Telecom Ltd(LDN) took part in the auction of 3.5GHz spectrum in the TR-I Mirpur region. The auction included representatives from the AJ&K and Gilgit region, Ministry of Information Technology(MoIT), Frequency Allocation Board(FAB) and the telecom industry in general. The auction took place in a fair and transparent manner via open outcry loud auction method. LDN put up the highest bid at PKR 10 Million for the first lot whereas PTCL matched the bid and took the second lot for the same price. Today, Qazi Lal Buksh is the last remaining practitioner of *chakankari* or leather needlework, at least in Balochistan. By his account, it was because of the large population of these artisans that the town’s precinct of Kosh Kalat – literally Shoe Fortress – took its name. *Tools and raw material of the chakankari master’s trade* While he continues to craft women’s slippers, male footwear has gone out of fashion. The latter was a shoe with an upturned toe, equipped with a sewn anklet that sometimes reached up to the knee like greaves used by horse riders. I've never really written a year end note, I've always wanted to, ever since I began this blog/online archive in 2007…gosh, has it really been that long? Anyway. I've been sitting on this note for days now, wondering how to pen my musings in a coherent fashion, all the while trying to make sense of a very, very challenging year. 2015 pushed me far out of my comfort zone, and I here I was thinking 2014 was rough.
