From the Blog pitafi A few months before the 2013 elections I asked Imran Khan in a media interaction to explain his vision of democratic governance. He said he preferred spiritual democracy with an emphasis on egalitarianism. You can imagine my surprise. I knew by this he didn’t mean a system where spirits and angels are allowed to vote. He obviously was referring to the poet philosopher Muhammad Iqbal’s philosophy. Apart from poetry, the sixth lecture in Iqbal’s Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam titled ‘The principle of movement in the structure of Islam’ sheds ample light on his interpretation of the term. I have little doubt about Iqbal’s intellectual prowess or the merits of arguments given in this little tome.
