Epoch defines the number of seconds that have elapsed since 1 January, 1970. It is so significant that almost every date time reference or calculation on a Linux or Unix system references epoch. If you programs that run on Linux or Unix, you will invariably run into date and time calculations, and eventually, into epoch. Unless you have everything on your tips, every time you do run into epoch, you will likely want to forage through documentation of the programming language in question for functions to deal with epoch conversions.
