The year started with a brutal massacre of Shia Hazaras in Balochistan by the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ). During the year, there were many other devastating terrorist attacks. The year ended with more than a hundred children killed point-blank by the Taliban in a school in Peshawar. We want to forget, but we cannot. The pain of all these attacks cannot be wished away even if one wants to. Every day is a grim and gloomy reminder of our scars and then there is fear that the worst is yet to come. Some people are optimistic that with the military brass and political class united to fight terrorism, things will get better. Back from the brink

From the Blog odysseuslahoriA quarter century ago, driving from Dipalpur to Haveli Lakha in Okara district of Punjab, I passed a gateway with a couple of human figures in terracotta. If memory serves, there were some more peering down from niches in the wall. Pausing, I learnt that this was the ‘tomb of Bhuman Shah’ in the village of the same name. Bhuman Shah, so my young informant said, was a great saint from even before his grandfather’s time – which in the vernacular means a very long time ago. I looked in and noticed a building with an impressive façade flanked by octagonal turrets with a central gateway on my right. Straight ahead, at the end of the street could be seen another building with an octagonal turret. This disentanglement has had less to do with my efforts and more with the fact that asthma tends to lose interest in its sufferers as they grow into adulthood. The first decade of my life was punctuated by an unhealthy amount of hospital admissions, the second decade with a gradual decrease in their frequency, and the last seven years have been more or less hospital-free. My NYE went pretty typical ; all curled in up comforter, watching a movie. Mainly because we had it celebrated a day before. On 30th. Yeah I know it's pretty unusual but where I wanted to have it celebrated, at the sea side, it could be S O crowded on NYE. So we went a day earlier. Begari Wah, Salam, Jekum Sahib Bahadur

From the Blog odysseuslahoriWhen the British annexed Sindh in 1843, they found a land criss-crossed by a multitude of canals, each with a name of its own. The names rang of former rulers, mainly the Kalhoras, who held Sindh from 1701 to 1784. In the country north of what was then known as district Chandka in upper Sindh, present-day Larkana, there was one canal that nurtured gardens, orchards and excellent farmland. It had a peculiar name: Begari Wah, the suffix meaning canal in Sindhi. The Persian word begar denotes forced, unpaid labour. The long-established method was that village headmen were obliged to provide labour proportionate to the estimated benefit derived from the canal. This explains the name Beghari Wah. 10th Karachi International Book Fair Haul

Even though due to my unforgiving schedule I haven't been able to get into a decent reading routine, I can still miss a Sephora sale for KIBF. It's a bookworm's heaven and I have been to all of them till date. KIBF is held in December each year and it is GINORMOUS! There are booksellers from all around the region as well as globe! I get most of my books from Paramount and Liberty Books. This time around since my brother was in town, we picked up tons more than what I have been getting for past two years.
