Surrender is no option
From the Blog PkColumnist.com: Surrender is no option - Late last year in Kyrgyzstan, and just recently in Tunisia, the masses had had enough of their corrupt, tyrannical rulers. They came out on the streets and managed to overthrow their rulers, who barely managed to flee for their lives. These events have given a ray of hope to the suppressed people in Algeria, Egypt and Pakistan. The reinstatement of the 4,000 sacked employees of the KESC has just shown what people power can do. The history of dictators is the same all over the world – they never leave peacefully or willingly. It was July 1977, when an ungrateful and ruthless dictator had just staged a coup and become king of all he saw. In those days I used to stop at Aabpara market on my way back from the office to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. One day, a man came to the shop and said the vegetable-seller: "Have you heard that Ziaul Haq has announced that he will hold elections within 90 days and will hand over power to the elected representatives?" The shopkeeper smiled and said: "Ziaul Haq has become the absolute ruler, he has tasted power and will never give it up easily." I was surprised at the understanding and foresight of the vegetable-seller. Dictators are either taken care of by nature or are forced to flee by angry masses. Countries like Libya, Egypt and Algeria are ruled by individuals with no trace of public participation in governance. Opposition is ruthlessly crushed. Unfortunately, dictators never learn from history. More often than not, they leave in disgrace, to die and be buried on foreign soil. The Almighty has declared it an unforgivable sin for someone to despair and lose faith in Him. It has been mentioned in Surah Yusuf that when the Prophet Yaqub (AS) asked his sons to go and look for their two brothers, Yusuf (AS) and Binyamin, he told them not to despair, as only non-believers lacked faith in the benevolence of Allah. Allah does sometimes put people to hardship to test their mettle and their faith in Him. In Surah Baqara, the Almighty has warned us: "Be sure, We shall test you: with fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits of your toil; but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere and say, when afflicted with calamity: 'To Allah we belong and to Him is our return.' " The path to betterment and relief is always open as Allah is most Merciful and most Benevolent and He has a solution to all problems. Those who have unflinching faith in Him always succeed. Our history is full of golden examples of many such episodes. In Surah Alam Nashrah, the Almighty said: "So verily, with every difficulty there is relief. Verily, with every difficulty there is relief." Starting from Adam (AS) we have numerous examples where relief was given after severe hardship. I have mentioned these Surahs because the public is in severe distress and losing hope due to the prevailing system of corruption, unemployment, inflation, and load-shedding. They believe, unfortunately, that there is no relief in sight. The problem is that the nation has become psychologically depressed and given up all hope. They must realise that such calamities also befell other nations, but once they revolted against dictators and tyrants, their problems came to an end and it became just as Allah said in Surah Yasin: "It was no more than a single mighty blast and, behold, they were like ashes, quenched and silent." We saw that happen in France, Russia, China, Cuba, Iran and, more recently, in Kyrgyzstan and Tunisia. Our public must also realise that they are not cattle to be herded and beaten at the will of cruel rulers. They have brains to think, eyes to see, ears to listen, feet to walk and arms to protect and defend themselves. Here is a story told by Shaikh Sadi, which should be an eye-opener for all of us. A man saw a fox bereft of the use of its legs. He wondered how the animal managed to survive. Then he saw a tiger with a dead jackal in its mouth. After eating its fill, the tiger left the carcass, which still had some meat on it. The fox dragged itself out of its hiding place and ate the remains. The next day, the fox was again provided food by the Almighty in a similar manner. The man thought that he saw the light of true knowledge and reflected: "I will sit here like an ant, for the elephant's position is not gained because of its might." So he sat in silence waiting for his daily food to come from the invisible. Nothing happened, and soon he was reduced to skin and bones. He heard a voice coming from a mosque saying: "Go, o false, invalid, one! Be the ferocious and rending tiger and behave not as a paralytic fox. Exert yourself like the tiger so that something may remain from you for the needy ones. Why, like the fox, appease your hunger with the remains. Eat of the fruits of your own endeavours, strive like a man and relieve the wants of the needy." The Almighty has said in Surah Hud: "There is no moving creature on earth but that its sustenance depends on Allah. He knows the time and place of its definite abode and temporary deposit. All is in clear record." In Surah Ankabut, it is said: "How many are the creatures that carry not their own sustenance? It is Allah who feeds (both) them and you for He hears and knows (all things)." Allah has also very clearly warned us in Surahs Anfal and Ra'd that he never changes the condition of a people until they change it themselves. The moral of Sadi's story, and of my telling it, is to make people aware of their self-respect and their rights. They should not behave like a herd of cattle or the paralytic fox, but must like a proud, brave nation. They, especially the young generation, should not sit idle and accept the rotten system (i.e., corruption, unemployment, inflation, load-shedding, and scarcity of edibles), but should stand up and demand their rights, by force if necessary. It is their duty to save Pakistan from disintegration and destruction. . Read Full Post
