The death of a people

From the Blog Kanwalful meets world: The death of a people - Seeing as how everyone else is busy pointing out the intricacies of the Salman Taseer incident and whether or not it was justified to assassinate him, I chose to explore and portray a completely ignored aspect of the entire situation. Or so I would like to believe, in all my ignorance.  It is characteristic of my people to endlessly (times hundred) debate, exaggerate and fizzle out – each time a national crisis finds its way into our little, demonic world. We love doing that. It gets us the thrill of putting down the other person and prove how our opinions is “better” than theirs. It satisfies our thirst of drama – as if soap operas do not do that already. Then just when it is starting to get boring, we jump back into our lethargic, meaningless routines looking forward to yet another episode in all our typical, sadistic glory.  Each time such an event takes place, the enlightened portion of the society chooses to do NOTHING but protest on the streets. Exactly what the not-so-enlightened, illiterate segment of our society does, when they are faced with a dilemma. The only difference is the manner in which such protests are carried out. The former lit candles, in their latest “gathering” outside the Press Club (where they were supposedly demanding justice from some imaginary figure, who would obviously give them justice seeing as how he gives everyone justice when they come out on the streets) whereas the latter is more prone to lighting up tires when something infuriates them. So the similarity in thought is quite stark, with only the objects burnt being different.  Now, with the first two steps of the Pakistani “reaction to dilemma” over – i.e. drawing room debates and futile street protests – I think we are fast approaching the time where the impact of this tragedy will die down. What makes us think justice will ever be served – has it ever been? What makes us think we do anything to deserve that justice when our attempts to curb such incidents do not go beyond our Facebook statuses? What makes us think that it is not our responsibility to stand up for change because some-non-existent-else will?  It is truly time to go beyond raising banners of objection to the dark, lifeless, self-absorbed entity we call our government and justice system. And it is TRULY time to engage ourselves in thoughtful conversations that can lead us to making the change that is screaming out to be. Please lets put our education and intelligence to use. Just this time around. And do something for us that would make a difference. Even if it means eradicating ignorance and illiteracy millimeter by millimeter. “O judgment! Thou art fled to brutish beasts, And men have lost their reason. Bear with me. My heart is in the coffin there with Pakistan, And I must pause till it comes back to me.” (Adaptation of Mark Anthony’s speech in Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar) . Read Full PostComments
