Digitalizing the way you buy your books in Pakistan
From the Blog to me, writing software is fun !: Bookstuffonline.com: Digitalizing the way you buy your books in Pakistan - Yesterday, at NU , these guys presented their product and idea (i.e. bookstuffonline.com ). The idea is: you just give order at their website, they will get and inform you the book price, on your confirmation, they will deliver that book at your home and collect the payment. I love reading books, I likes their product, so thought to share with greater audiences. Some lessons from this startup: You don't always need a break through innovation to establish a business. You don't always need to invent, manufacture or publish things yourself to make sales, you just need to realize what gap exist in society around and by filling that gap you can make good business. (e.g. McDonald didn't invented Burger, Starbucks didn't discovered Coffee, but still they are world leaders of these products). Although internet is decreasing the roll of middle-man. But still because of difficulties in sourcing right suppliers, and lower product rate for high volume buyers, the middle-man can earn good profit share. I think, this is something that can't finish totally. Because manufacturer can't always sell to end users. And some end users just don't like to spend a lot of time in sourcing competitive manufacturer. These end users just go to trustable suppliers (even if they are aware that they are spending a little more money). Revenue sources and cost optimization points: These are the points where one can decrease expenses and search revenue for such business model based products: Getting high discounted rates from publishers and importers Importing products (e.g. books, etc.) directly Optimizing the communication channel with customer (e.g. to tell customer the actual price of product). For example: Keep updating your website with price, specially for the products you have delivered to another customer recently. And make products (e.g. books) searchable at website, so that user can see the price and confirm the order online (so no need to call for confirm price). Don't make a phone call to inform price. How? When user post a book order, show a good message that please check the price at evening or tomorrow at website by giving your order # and confirm order if the price is feasible. (sometime, you need a little time after knowing the price rather than saying "OK, Buy It" on live call. Sending SMS rather than calling and preferring landline call over cell phone call. (Ask user preferred method when taking order detail). Buying some special package from cellular network operator or PTCL for bulk calls. Is all this seems ridiculous to you, see, If you are saving 1 PKR/Order by optimizing the communication channel, and you served 10K order per month, you saved 10K PKR. (this cut is handsome, specially in early stage of a startup) What do you think about this product and other lessons from Pakistani entrepreneurs? . Read Full Post

Addressing a seminar on "Importance of Education in 21st Century" at Al-Hamra Hall today, he said that he had directed all the concerned departments to chalk-out a comprehensive plan for IT training of the youth, which is the future of Pakistan. The minister said that efforts were being put in order to spread the broad-band system in every nook and corner of the country while 3G Mobile Technology was also being introduced in Pakistan this year. Pakistani youth has great potential in the field of IT and Telecom Technology, he said and hoped that in the field of software, Pakistan would be among top ten countries in future. Sardar Assef said, we will have to allocate five to six per cent of the GDP for education sector for achievement of Millennium Development Goals by 2015. However, the federal and provincial governments are under immense financial pressure due to huge spending on war against terrorism, which is eating the vitals of our country. Earlier, a presentation was given to participants on the Higher National Diploma (HND) offered by Edexcel, which signed an agreement with World Education Centre UK, in this regard. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has granted HND an equivalence to a two-year Bachelors degree and students are given admission in the 3rd year in universities around the globe to complete their graduation.
