Q & A Session with Mustufa Pervez
From the Blog Koolmuzone: Q & A Session with Mustufa Pervez - By Hani Arif Q: Kindly tell us more about yourself and your music ? Well I'm just a regular guy who likes making music and is trying to make it big in the Pakistani music scene. I'm 20 years old and I've been doing music for about 5 years now. I started with acoustic rock and am progressing towards a more alternative rock sound but i like experimenting and i'll try various genres and collaborate with musicians talented in their fields. I've still got alot to learn. My other interests include music video production. All my videos are self made with help from my brothers and friends. Q: You started learning playing instruments just a few years back, have almost instantaneously started making music and are working on an album already, that's quite fast, your comments ? I actually took piano lessons 4-5 years ago which gave me the sense of music that I have today and I started playing the guitars 3 years ago. I'm a self taught guitarist. I kept on jamming with my friends, learning new things, playing some gigs, taking youtube lessons and even teaching some of my friends. I started doing home recordings back in 2007, getting a feel of music production along the way, kept sharing them with my friends and on the internet. It wasn't until this year that I went into a studio and did a proper recording. So its not completely instantaneous. Q: Where does your inspiration to write your songs come from ? Nothing specific. If I'm feeling sad and happen to pick up my guitar, I sing some random lyrics to it and inspiration or a brilliant line hits me, so in a matter of minutes I have a song. I keep a songbook, in which I write all the lyrics and chord progressions that come to my mind and I review them, rewrite them and make them perfect before going into the studio to record. Q: Do share more on your song making process, does it start from writing lyrics or from creating a composition ? My song making process usually starts from creating a composition. I'll have a chord progression and either a nice tab or arpeggio, I start writing lines that match. My songwriting is usually very optimistic and my music has a happy vibe to it. So in the end , I mostly have a song that's about hope and happiness. Its very rare that I'd write a very depressing sad song and I avoid writing love songs all the time. You'll see that in the album. I won't record a song that I just wrote yesterday, I constantly change the lines until I'm fully satisfied with it and feel that it's good to go. Q: Which artists do you listen to and are they the same ones that got you motivated to make your own music ? I've always been fascinated by music and how it's made. Ever since I was a child, I listened to different genres and was amazed how these tracks were made man thinking why couldn't I play that cool riff or that beautiful tab? I've been writing songs for a very long time now and my favourite bands are Coldplay, Call, Noori & Greenday and I've always been inspired by what I read about Ali Noor, Xulfi, Chris Martin, Bono, Billie Joe Armstrong, Freddie Mercury and all other great musicians. In a way, yes, they are the ones who inspired me to start doing music myself. Q: You are also pursuing an MBBS degree? Do you think that will affect your ability to continue making music unhindered ? Not really. My music does interfere with my studies and my parents only let me do it if my studies dont get disturbed but I make up for it by dividing the time between just these two, I don't involve myself in other extracurricular activities that much. There arent regular gigs or concerts in Hyderabad so right now the only time I give to my music are jamming sessions and when I'm recording. Inshallah I'll get my degree and I'll keep on doing music. Q: Do you in the future forsee you living off being a full time musician keeping in mind the current situation in the Pakistani music scene ? To be really honest, that's my dream. In Pakistan, not many people consider being a musician as a fulltime job but I think that if you really want to do it, it's the way to go. You can only create good music when you're focused. Plus touring and concerts that take time and you can't really pursue a fulltime job alongwith it. I personally think Pakistani musicians are doing great music and if young talent keeps coming up and we can get an infrastructure, better record deals, proper promotion for them, we'll be able to compare our music industry to any others. Q: Do you work with the same musicians in a studio setting for all tracks and are they part of your set otherwise too ? No. In the studio, it's just me and my producer. I give him the general idea and pattern of the song, record all the guitars/vocals parts and he does the rest. I like my songs to musically rich so its a job well done by him. On stage its my band Method41 that I perform with. I formed it with a friend of mine and it now includes my brothers on keyboards and drums. Onstage I perform with them under this band name. They're my biggest support and they help in the whole video making process too. Q: With the increasing number of artists and competition, isn't it easier for a band to be able to make good music due to shared responsibilities, so why did you choose to pursue music on your own as a solo artist ? It's not neccesary for you to be in a band to be making good music. As long as you're creative and you trust yourself, you can do it on your own too. I personally feel that I can do better as a solo artist because it makes me the creative head of my work and there aren't any clashes between band members. In my case, all the band members except one are M.B.B.S students so everyones preoccupied and I didnt want to disturb their studies too so I started my own thing. Q: With your pace of learning and making songs, should we be expecting a quick album release too ? Its not really been quick, as I mentioned above. I'll be releasing 3 more videos before the album is launched online and I dont think it'll be before May 2011. So there's still time. I'm still perfecting my craft but keep on watching this space for more.
