A fight liberals should really be up for

From the Blog Five Rupees: A fight liberals should really be up for - So Sherry Rehman has proposed amending the ridiculous and bigoted blasphemy laws in this country. Kudos to her. The basic form of the proposed amendment is as follows: Rehman proposes that the death sentence (Pakistan Penal Code 295 C) be reduced to a 10-year imprisonment and recommends that the life imprisonment (section 295 B) be substituted with a five-year imprisonment sentence. The move which is likely to incur the wrath of the country's religious circles has been under discussion for a long time but up till now, no legislator dared to formally submit any such law due to the matter's sensitive nature. Though it is a private member bill and is likely to get across party lines support from the liberal legislators, the religious parties and some right wing parties will be strongly opposed to it. Rehman has also proposed that a new section 203 A should be added to the PPC which states that 'anyone making false or frivolous accusation under any of the sections of 295 A, 295 B and 295 C of the PPC shall be punished in accordance with similar punishments prescribed in the section under which the false or frivolous accusation was made". Another section has been proposed in the Penal code by the name of section 298 E under which any advocacy of religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination or violence shall be punishable with imprisonment of either description for an imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine or both. So the bottom line seems to be: those accused of this idiotic crime don’t actually die, and those doing the accusing stand for a little more punishment. Can’t argue with that. Who knows what lies ahead for this draconian and disgusting law? It’s easy to be cynical and think things will never change — I think this way often — but then I think back to the 2006 Women’s Rights Bill that brought about important changes to the rape laws in this country, and then I think, “Well, who the hell knows? Maybe it can happen.” But this is an important fight, and one liberals should really coalesce around irrespective of the final result. The point is that all sorts of bigoted pricks will attempt to stand in the way of any change to these laws, whether it be pricks with beards or pricks without beards. In fact, it is quite remarkable to see that the “logic” of the pricks with beards against any changes to these laws, or any pardon to Aasia Bibi, bears a striking resemblance to the logic of the pricks without beards : the threat of social unrest (that the pricks themselves cause), the warnings against “foreign influence”, and the remonstrations against abandoning our “Islamic” heritage (whatever that means). It’s all the same. This just goes to show that in Pakistan, being a prick has very little to do with having a beard. In any event, liberals are often outmatched and outnumbered by the many, many pricks in our country, but that doesn’t mean we just shut up. These are exactly the types of issues where liberals should yell, scratch and fight as bad as the pricks. Maybe it makes no difference in the end, but maybe it does. I mean, no one is under the illusion that even if the law is changed, that violence against minorities will magically end, but it would be a start, wouldn’t it? To that end, if any enterprising reader out there wants to organize something, such as a protest or a rally in favor of abandoning these ridiculous laws — such as the one shown here — you have this blog as free advertisement. I will tweet and blog any details you want, and will encourage people to attend to the extent I can. Like I said, this is a fight we should really be up for. As an aside, isn’t it interesting why a certain disgusting manifestation of this disgusting law prompts more action than other disgusting manifestations of this disgusting law? It’s not as if this is the first time some poor minority is being screwed with, but for whatever reason, the Aasia Bibi case has really captured the social and political imagination of this country. Not that it matters a lot, but it is interesting to think about why this case and not the others. … . Read Full PostComments
