Changing lives for the better
From the Blog PkColumnist.com: Changing lives for the better - For three days Eidul Azha united Muslims across the world in one crucial mission – feeding the poor. Close to a billion people will go to bed tonight with an empty stomach, many millions of them living in the Muslim world. In Pakistan a mounting food crisis over the past two years has pushed the number of people without enough food to 45 million, a figure which has grown even larger following the destruction of millions of hectares of crops during the recent floods. The impacts of hunger amount to far more than an empty stomach – the World Health Organisation (WHO) has named malnutrition the gravest single threat to the world's public health, with children bearing the highest burden. Malnutrition contributes to over half of all child deaths, with one million children dying every year from a lack of Vitamin A alone. Malnutrition in infancy also has a massive and irreversible effect on the rest of a child's life, with studies showing that it leads to lower earnings and lower productivity, meaning those who have had a bad start in life are pushed even deeper into poverty through no fault of their own. The Muslim community in Britain has done fantastic work to help lift the spectre of hunger from the world's poorest countries. This Eid al-Adha Islamic Relief has been packaging donated Hajj meat and sending hundreds of thousands of cans to the very poorest countries in the world – a brilliant initiative that I'd urge all those who have sacrificed for Eid to take part in. The UK government is also working across the developing world to ensure millions of people are fed and nourished. At the G8 summit in June, David Cameron reaffirmed the UK's commitment to spend more than £1 billion on agriculture and food security, support which will lead to higher incomes for farmers, fewer people going hungry and increased nutrition for children. This will make a real difference, and as part of these efforts 115,000 families in Pakistan hit hard by the floods will now have access to seeds and crop packages thanks to UK aid. These families, who faced an uncertain winter following August's devastating disaster, will now be able to plant wheat seeds before the end of the 'Rabi' winter crop planting window, providing a vital source of food over the difficult months to come. Britain has prioritised our support for this. Eidul Azha was a time for celebration but also for contemplation. It's important that in the year to come we take time to remember the plight of those suffering from hunger around the world, and continue to do all we can to help change their lives for the better. .
