Nobody knows anything about anything

From the Blog Five Rupees: Nobody knows anything about anything - This whole fake Taliban story is hilarious in a very dark way, but I also think it’s very revealing. It tells me that my thoughts on the war in Afghanistan are pretty accurate, that is, nobody knows anything. A couple of months ago, I exchanged a couple of emails with a fellow grad student friend of mine. This is what I said when the subject turned to Afghanistan and the war there: Dude this whole Afghanistan war has made me realize nobody knows anything. I’m not trying to be glib AT ALL. I don’t know anything beyond the obvious about it, and I bet people who think they know are either delusional, lying, or self-unaware. I mean, just the amount of accusations and counter accusations and whispers of support and deal-making (from all sides, mind…for instance, if you ask me if Karzai is closer to PK or US right now, I won’t be able to tell you) and espionage and the CIA funding Karzai’s brother and then intentionally leaking that to the NYT…seriously WHAT are we supposed to believe? Everyone has an agenda, everyone strategically leaks to the papers (ISI, CIA, and Afghans), everyone thinks they know what the other side wants but they don’t, and as a consequence, we don’t know shit. Am I wrong? If I asked you to write a 3 page memo on the Afghan war, the main players and their motivations/preferences, do you think you would be able to do it? Would anyone? Not trying to be flippant here, but my guess is this war is unknowable. It’s basically why I stopped writing about events there. There was a time when I wrote pretty regularly about the Pakistan angle there (and sometimes I still do), but in general: how the hell am I supposed to write about something when I have no idea about it? . And judging by this fake Taliban story, I’m not alone. If the Americans don’t even know who they’re sitting next to — they still can’t confirm or deny if this was actually an imposter — then what can they possibly know? And why should anyone trust what anyone — American, Pakistani, or Afghan; security official, think tanker or journalist — says about anything that goes on in that country? … . Read Full PostComments
