Slackistan – The City that Always Sleeps

From the Blog CHUP! – Changing Up Pakistan: Slackistan – The City that Always Sleeps - Last week, I attended a screening of Slackistan, an independent film by director Hammad Khan. The film, which premiered in London, Abu Dhabi, New York City, and San Francisco , was recently described by the NY Times as, "a pitch-perfect comedy about restless youths in Islamabad," and is a raw embodiment . Save The Tigers

From the Blog Speak Your Mind!!!: Save The Tigers - Now this is extremely sad, this year hardly 3200 tigers are left in the wild. 2010 was the Year of The Tiger. The next Year of The Tiger will be in 2022 and experts fear there will be no more tigers left here. That is a big big loss for us. Documentaries are showing that the natural rehab for tigers is being destroyed by making plantations, business, factories and much more…whether legal or illegal is another matter. The important thing is that the tigers are losing their home. The catch is, that tigers can be conserved and protected, if they are given space, prey and proper safe environment. Sometime in the coming months, the 13 Heads of Government from countries that still have wild tigers will come together in St. Petersburg, Russia, for an historic meeting:  The Tiger Summit . A chance for them to act and double the number of wild tigers by 2022, the next Year of the Tiger! In pledging your support for tigers, we hope to use that weight of public opinion to persuade these Leaders to: Agree on a  programme of work to double the number of tigers in the wild Create a  sustainable financing mechanism for key components of this programme. Create a new intergovernmental platform for overseeing and monitoring its implementation. Please sign the following petition to support this cause: Save the Tigers – Don’t miss this chance . NOT WITHOUT HIS DAUGHTER

From the Blog GypSy: NOT WITHOUT HIS DAUGHTER - I came to Karachi first time after going to Lahore and was attending birthday of a friend's son. I was sitting casually when my wife brought a young girl in his arms. "I believe you haven't met." She turned the kid's face towards me. " Eh ?" I reacted eerily to her humor for saying that I had not met my daughter. "We have met, ma'm." And that was when I saw the kid's face and realized that it was not Misil. It was Zoya. It's not very common for me to start writing and not knowing what to write. Tonight is one of those nights when I am struggling with my words. Zoya is a very cute kid. I know every kid is cute and needs love and compassion but right now I am not talking about every kid. I am talking about one particular kid and she is a very adorable kid. Darling daughter to a proud father. She is only two months younger than Misil. At times kids don't get along with each other and fight over small things and toys but Misil and Zoya never really fought. They got along really well. I only saw that when I visited Pakistan on last Eid and saw them playing together. It also made me realize that staying away from friends in greed for riches and career and opulence makes you miss out on a few things. Zoya and Misil, September 2010 (Karachi) At least you miss out on your kids growing up with your friends' kids. Her father is a sensitive man. He is not an insensitive retard like I am. Things affect him. Things like the country's state of affairs, like social injustice, like the uncharacteristic lives we have started living in search of money. We make fun of him and he is an explicit source of entertainment for all of us with his at times slapstick humor and at times no-so-slapstick comedy of errors. At IBA, he was the mimicry king that used to make everyone roll on the floor in amusement. I had met him a week back in Dubai and we had discussed ambitions and plans. How long would we want to stay in Dubai and then how we wanted our careers to progress? Tonight when I finished talking to him half an hour back, I knew I was talking to a different man. That giggle in his voice was missing. What do you expect from a father whose daughter is battling with life and death and her age is only 26 months? Is 26 months an age to fight for your life? To go through the medical treatment that even adults struggle to endure? To go through everything with doctors giving you percentage chances of survival? 'Here sir, we have spent millions on becoming a doctor and you will spend millions on your patient's treatment but the best we can offer you is 60% chance of survival, sir. That's our last offer, sir. No discounts and we cannot increase the percentage either, sir. Oh, and meanwhile in the months to come, we will poke your daughter with hundreds of needles and put her on scary machines and suck her blood out and give her and you terrible torture, sir!' No… we don't want any ' percentage' of survival chances. We want 100% survival. 99% is not an option. "Have you thought about going back to UAE? Won't it be better monetarily?" I asked him despite knowing what his answer was going to be. "I want to be with my daughter." He did not even pause for a second. "I am back to Pakistan and I am not going back. She is the one I went to UAE for so she is the one I am back for. There will be many more opportunities in life. I can't stay away from her now." I want to tell him that I can imagine what he is going through but I know it will be a lie. I see them going through it and it tears my heart. I cannot imagine what would be going on in the minds of the parents. Chemotherapy can deteriorate strong adults and she is a two year old kid. I have seen this pain when I saw my mother's body gradually giving up to the pain. I felt helpless back in 1998 and saw my mother leaving me. I know I cannot do much but I can assure you two things, my friend. Even if it takes every single penny in my pockets, I will put everything in front of you if it can save her. Just don't let money be the reason for a reduced effort. And you want me to pray for her during Hajj… I won't have any other prayer on my lips and in my heart in those five days. I will only ask for her long, happy and healthy life even if it costs me all my other prayers. My apologies to every other friend or relatives who have asked me to pray for him but this one is more important and needs undivided attention. That's the least I can do for him… and for her. .
