Ah, so that’s what the ‘politics of reconciliation’ looks like
From the Blog FiveRupees - Ah, so that’s what the ‘politics of reconciliation’ looks like October 27th, 2010 A quick Google search for “gilani politics of reconciliation” throws up 106,000 results. Since this PPP government came to power, Pakistan Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has been the front man in being nice and cuddly to both the military and (especially) the judges. It’s basically all he talks about. Well, the ExTrib has details on how the politics of reconciliation actually manifests itself (via @mirza9 ): Sixteen judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan were quietly allotted residential plots worth millions of rupees each in Islamabad’s expensive sectors over the last two years (2008-2010) on the direct orders of the Prime Minister’s Secretariat under a scheme somewhat incredulously called the “Prime Minister’s Assistance Package”. Documents exclusively available with The Express Tribune reveal that, apart from the allotment of plots to 16 Supreme Court judges under the Prime Minister’s Assistance Package, 14 judges of the Supreme Court — both sitting and retired – were given two plots each by the government in violation of official policy, which restricts such allotments to only one plot per person, and that too if they do not already have a plot in the capital. Gotta love it. Of course, this is very interesting: The exception in the updated list of judges’ who have been allotted plots, is the name of the honourable Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, who has not been allotted any plots in Islamabad. Now, there’s a serious endogeneity problem here. Did Holy Man Chaudhry not get the goodies because he’s been such a thorn in the government’s side, or has he been such a thorn in the government’s side because he did not get the goodies? … Five Rupees
