Minion Hat
From the Blog ummeyusuf These days, my toddler is quite fond of minions (of the Despicable Me animated movies). At some movement of overwhelming maternal affection, I promised her a minion hat a couple of weeks ago. So this had to be the project marking my post-partum recovery. I used this pattern for the basic hat pattern (it is an awesome pattern by the way, and I was much tempted to cast-on an actual fair-isle version) and improvised with all the minion components. I am happy to have fulfilled my promised and my daughter is happy to have a "min" hat, which she would much rather hold and look at, than put on her head... pakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments
Arab conquest of Sindh
From the Blog odysseuslahoriThe common misconception is that, because he attacked Debal (Bhambore) on the seaboard, Mohammad bin Qasim (MbQ) came by sea leading an armada. This fallacy came up again when my friend Husain Qazi returned recently from a road trip in Makran. Among his collection of images is one of a sign declaring a cluster of graves "Tombs of the soldiers of Mohammad bin Qasim … ". This sign sits near village Aghor in the lower reach of the Hingol River, about 10 kilometres (km) upstream of the river's mouth. The ruinous tombs are crafted with slabs of worked sandstone in the same style as the Chaukundi tombs of Sindh — tombs that can also be found at several sites in adjacent parts of Balochistan. I do not know who caused that sign to be put up but whoever he is, he clearly is a moronic pakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

Dresser Tour
From the Blog thebrunettehead I love pretty dressers and this is my take on pretty-fying my dresser. It's never the same. Since my dresser has four very spacious, chest-like drawers I prefer a very de-cluttered and clean top so that I can make room for things I am currently using. I have always kept fake flowers on my dresser top as it seems to brighten up the whole mood by a substantial amount. This mirror by Conair is a hearth-throb of mine. I absolutely love the modern look of it, so simple yet intriguing. I like to keep a couple accessories and nail polishes on there which I keep switching everyday according to the mood. Here in this post you can find some of my favourite scents and some very cute looking polishes. pakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

Their hubris knows no bounds, but, then, they never pay the price for their foolishness. Who pays? The funny side of… monkey business

Shopping Finds- Karachi on Sale mode ;)

Punjabi Elite and Armed Forces: is there a Connection?
From the Blog pakteahouse *M*ost of the political developments in Pakistan involve armed forces and also Punjab’s politicians as Punjab is the most populous province. Some or the other, a narrative has developed which links Punjab and armed forces (who mostly hail from Punjab) in a conspiring role. Even now as President Zardari is having political problems, several journalists are calling it a conspiracy of Punjab, hatched with the support of armed forces, against smaller provinces. So does such a linkage exist? Can we establish with certainty that army is nothing except an armed wing whose sole existence is to ensure Punjab’s dominance? Does the army systematically and more importantly INTENTIONALLY safeguard Punjab’s interest or army is merely protecting and promoting its institutional interestpakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

The Alienated Groom
From the Blog awaisaftabMore than 5 years ago, I wrote about my perception of weddings in Pakistani society: "The ceremony has become more about appeasing the society than about celebrating the union of two people. [The wedding] has lost its purpose in this manner, and hence it is not surprising that the feeling which I have most markedly noticed while attending any [wedding] is that of absurdity. Weddings have never been enjoyable for me, even as a child. Perhaps because the wedding ceremony appears to me to be the perfect example of the superficialities and hypocrisies of our culture; it has become a symbol for me of whatever I hate about our society." PTI: Win, its Change - If Not, its Rigging

But here we have an ego-full person, who believes that he is wiser than Plato and handsome than Brad Pitt, and believes it his birthright to become the premier of Pakistan. He is being shown reality mirror again and again by the public of Pakistan in general and bi-elections, but he is so arrogant and adamant to not to see into it. Talks or action against talibna / TTP: Dilemma for Pakistan. Why not have a referendum ?
From the Blog ppakistanFor several years, politicians, people and section of media is asking for operation against taliban / ttp. However, there is a lot of uncertainty and fear about back lash and fall out from the operation. The same thing happened during lal masjid operation, where people and media demanded for operation against the culprits, but later start crticising the government for use of the military tactics and the way it was perforned. When you perform an action against militants, it can go either way, with any party taking any adverse affect. However, to remove the uncertainty among people and leaders, why not the government have a refrendum with the people of pakistan. Lets have another election, where people of pakistan should decide if they want action against taliba or if they want tapakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments
2014 - The Year of No Resolution
From the Blog beanbagtalesIt's not a good idea to pen down resolutions and keep them neatly in a folder. You're bound to find the paper (or papers if you are ambitious) when you're throwing out the old to make space for the new (an exercise some of us indulge in when the new year starts) and once you've come across those lined sheets there is no other option but to make a trip to the guilt motel. After making several trips to the guilt motel last year, I have deleted the word resolution from my life. Resolutions, in my experience, are dangerous creatures. When I made resolutions last year, which I duly noted down, I limited myself to those six or seven points. I made a parameter around my life and put in 'ifs' and 'buts' over every action. *'If I do the above in two months' time, I am entitled to this. Ipakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

Can the Taliban Defeat and Destroy Pakistan?
From the Blog riazhaqWhile some Pakistanis, including major political leaders, are afraid of speaking out against the Taliban, other Pakistanis are taking the challenge posed by the insurgents lightly. They are underestimating the power and the capacity of a rag-tag band of barbarians to bring down the Pakistani state and take control in the nation's capital in Islamabad. It's important for Pakistanis to learn from history to end such complacency. Ibn Khaldun*History Lessons:* Famous medieval Islamic historian Abd ur Rehman Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406) argued in his masterpiece "Muqaddima" that tribesmen and barbarians have often had more courage and social cohesion than settled and civilized folk. The Furry Sage
From the Blog sonyarehman *By Sonya Rehman* I was 22-years-old when I first saw him. Muhammadeen, our gardener, had carried him in his left hand, down the street from my neighbor's house. At the time, my neighbor's Cocker Spaniel and Russian Terrier were constantly making puppies; the mix was fascinating – chubby, black and white pups with spaniel faces, and terrier coats and tails. Bruce, now almost 8.5 years old, was no exception. I remember opening the front door to Muhammadeen, grinning away, and Bruce – lodged comfortably in his hand, his fat paws and legs dangling from the sides, his big belly resting on Muhammadeen's palm, and his soft, furry, face snoozing on the tips of the gardener's fingers. It was love at first sight. Back then, I had gone through a painful break-up with a boy who was alsopakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments
...Of Festivals And Firm Refusals
From the Blog lalioutloudThere are very few excuses this time, and those few are flimsy at best. It has been laziness, plain and simple, that's kept me from writing for the better part of the last 5 months. I've had time - not ample time, but enough to hammer out a rough draft or two - and I've had ideas, but I've lacked the get-up-and-go that is the catalyst to productivity. A lot has happened over the last five or six months, several events warranting a write-up, but they've gone largely uncelebrated-or unmourned. Still, better late than never (God forbid). What follows is a hodge-podge of ideas that have been on my mind recently. *Notes On A Festival * I plan my once-a-month weekend around events that interest me, so that my weekends serve a dual purpose; touching base with the folks back home and (pakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

Anime and Manga Updates 3
From the Blog accordingtomarium Post* may contain spoilers* so please read at your own expense. Yes, its been a long break between fall and spring semesters and ive had a lot of time to indulge myself in the wonderful, magical, albeit fictional but spectacular world of anime and manga. Id say, during the holidays i became an otaku in the Japanese sense of the word, as in my face never saw the light of the sun during this period nor did i 'mingle with my peers' outside of those that exist in the virtual realm. I think it is safe to assume that this has been the most fun ive had in a boring way since i attended a class that had a gassy instructor trying her best not to fart loudly during the lecture. Amethyst by Roohy
From the Blog allurebyn A few days ago my girls and I visited Roohy's for our usual mani pedis. The spa is located near the Chinese Embassy in Clifton and is hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby traffic, making it the perfect place for a relaxing short getaway. I must say I was really impressed with the spa. They had separate areas for hair, manis pedis and other services. The chairs for the manis and pedis were quite high ( the only downside for someone as short as I) but the pedicure basin actually turned into a jaccuzi which was amazing! My favorite part though was the hair wash basins. The chair turned into a reclining massage chair - Bliss at its finest! I opted to have my gel nails done while my friends had manis and pedis. Russia Can't Deliver On Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft FGFA: IAF
From the Blog asian-defenceThe Indian Air Force (IAF) has done a stunning about-turn, sharply criticizing the showpiece Indian-Russian project to co-develop a futuristic *Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft* (FGFA). Even as New Delhi and Moscow finalize a $6 billion deal to co-develop an *FGFA* with capabilities tailor-made for India, the IAF has alleged the Russians would be unable to meet their promises about its performance. So vital is the FGFA considered for the IAF's future that Defence Minister A K Antony has publicly rejected any prospect of buying the American fifth generation F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, declaring the FGFA would suffice. In 2007, New Delhi and Moscow highlighted the fighter's critical by signing an Inter Governmental Agreement (IGA) placing the project above MoD procurement rules. Individual liberty or societal damnation – a simple choice
From the Blog pakteahouse *By Javed Hassan* Muslims are rightly proud of great thinkers who emerged from the Islamic milieu of the so called Islamic Golden Age. Avicenna, Omar Khayyám , Averroes, Razi, and many more not only carried forward the Greek tradition of rational enquiry but also innovated and brought about new discoveries. We should rejoice the greatness that was once there, and the potential that we might still have to achieve such heights again. However, before that happens we need to ask ourselves the question that Dawkins posed to all of us, 'why are there only ten Muslim Nobel laureates compared to thirty from Trinity College Cambridge/". It's worth noting that there are some two hundred plus Jewish recipients of the prize. Why has there been virtually no major scientific contribution fpakistanblogs.blogspot.comRead Full PostComments

Who is a disciple?

'In deeds' means that he does nothing, whether in a religious or worldly matter, contrary to what has been sanctioned by his guide, even if it be an act of devotion! 'In heart' means keeping his heart unstained by any blameworthy quality, just as his guide does.
