Not the sexy battle of wits

From the Blog Speak Your Mind!!!: Not the sexy battle of wits - Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:”Table Normal”; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:”"; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:”Times New Roman”; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} I think it's very easy to hold opinions when we are looking at a thing from a distance. Moreover, we are writers & when someone gives us an opportunity to think dirty, we do. It's simply human nature. Anyway, I have 5 celebrities (Rishi Kapoor, Karan Johar, Ranbir, Deepika & Sonam) in my mind & I'm on nobody's side. Actually what happened on Koffee with Karan hasn't been digested well. People have been vomiting all over. I think all of them are at fault. This was Ranbir's battle & there was no need for Rishi Kapoor to give ultimatum to people. Although I agree that Karan Johar instigates people, but how else would he have masala stuff on his show? And then Sonam & Deepika are not kids. They had a motive & they took that chance & they have very successfully shattered the image of Ranbir Kapoor. His sexual capacity is in question. Both Sonam & Deepika have painted him as someone who's only interested in things between the sheets but he's not good at it. Relationships are not about having big O or finding G-spot. It's a lot more than that. But Sonam & Deepika have given too much stress on just the little business between 2 sheets. If he was so bad, why didn't they ditch him? They were also enemies few days ago, but now they are such good buddies. The reason was so simple – they had to lynch a common target. Maybe this has been the greatest thrill they had ever experienced. Anyhow a guy who is fucking around all the time & ditching women when he gets tired of them should expect the wrath of women to fall on him any time. And Ranbir had been struck badly. What a pity he didn't know that all women are unpredictable bitches! But I still don't see as to why Rishi Kapoor had to jump in. And Karan Johar needs to learn some manners whereas as Deepika, Sonam & Ranbir need to watch Guzaarish. Although I don't think they can understand what it's like to be sexually starved for 14 years, but still they need to work on something known as human emotions rather than satisfying their egos & that too in public. Indian writers have been telling us that sex can be used to expand love or shut it out & all desires are spiritual when seen to their deepest level. These 3 kids need to read stuff or keep their damn mouths shut, cause on a mental level, they are not at all sexy. . Read Full PostComments

Two of my most innocent friends

From the Blog That's Wrong!: Two of my most innocent friends - I am really impressed by the innocene and naivety of two of my friends. They were so ridiculously naive that whenever I tell people about their innocent remarks, people get cramps in their bellies due to laughing. Sheikh was my class fellow and roommate in Islamabad's National University of Computer Sciences (NUCES). One day I was watching a documentary about the development of child in the womb. Sheikh asked me some questions about human reproduction and I answered them. Seeing Sheikh's curiosity in the subject, I asked him, "Do you know how unborn baby gets feed while in the mother's womb?" Sheikh gave an answer which I can never forget. He said, the would-be mother inserts the nipple of a feeding bottle in her belly button and baby sucks the milk from inside the womb. Sheikh was 20 years old then. Akhtar and I shared an apartment in Lahore. He was doing his MBA. He was a soft spoken and sensitive person. We never saw him angry or yelling at anyone. He had an effeminate personality. He would blush like a girl whenever we used to discuss girls or anything girly;). Akhtar didn't know two things. He had not seen the zoo during his whole life and he did'nt know female anatomy. He remained our apartment's butt of all dirty jokes during his stay in Lahore. . Read Full PostComments

Pakistan-Russia relations — A new beginning

From the Blog PkColumnist.com: Pakistan-Russia relations — A new beginning - "Without any condition here we are your allies in the full sense of the word" was how Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin conveyed his warm feelings to his Pakistani counterpart Yousaf Raza Gilani when the two met on November 25, 2010 on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Dushanbe. Both reiterated their belief that there are vast opportunities for mutually beneficial relations and complementarities that must be utilised optimally for mutual advantage. Putin told Gilani that Russian companies were interested in investing in various sectors in Pakistan, speaking in response to Gilani's desire "to seek comprehensive partnership with Russia" and his proposal for a bilateral dialogue on matters relating to peace and  stability in Afghanistan . The desire to augment bilateral  relations between Moscow and Islamabad should be explored for a new beginning by building a strong edifice of interactions aimed at strategic, political and economic convergence through consultations on the "evolving new security architecture in the Asia pacific region as well Greater Eurasian Region". Relations between Pakistan and the former USSR have historically been cool, even antagonistic, during the decade of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan and earlier due to Indo-Soviet friendship. After the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the emergence of the Russian Federation, relations have steadily improved, particularly in the economic field. A debt-rescheduling agreement of $127 million was signed in March 2005. Russia also supported Pakistan's request for  observer status at the SCO and Pakistani leaders have since met their Russian counterparts at SCO meetings in different capitals. However, relations between the two countries lacked depth and dimension despite strong possibilities for mutual cooperation. The spell was broken in April 2007 when then prime minister Mekhail Fredkov visited Pakistan, the first visit by a Soviet leader in almost four decades. Fredkov termed his visit an 'important step' for strengthening bilateral relations between Pakistan and Russia with special focus on cementing economic ties. Since Fredkov's visit, relations have been steady but with below par progress. Prospects for joint collaboration in the oil sector were explored with the signing of an MoU on November 19, 2007 during Pakistan's petroleum minister's visit to Moscow. Economic interaction has till now lacked behind the strong political desire to forge close relations. The annual trade turnover is a pitiful $700 million. Defence relations between Moscow and Islamabad have also been non-existent except one maverick helicopter deal in 1969 during then president Yahya's visited to Moscow. Pakistan has now expressed interest in the purchase of a MI-35 attack helicopter to fight terrorism. An MoU is also under consideration on defence collaboration to intensify overall cooperation. Pakistan has an important place in Russia's foreign policy, being one of the major influential Muslim countries. Pakistan's foreign policy is now rightly gravitating towards Central Asia and close relations with Russia would pay us a rich dividend. Pakistan should institute a high-level dialogue on strategic and political issues and build up a mechanism to focus on economic cooperation through increased market access to Pakistani products in Russia and building connectivity in trade and energy sectors. Friendly and cooperative relations with Moscow will also assist us in securing full membership of the SCO and open the door for significant economic activity with all Central Asian States, rich in oil and energy resources. . For whom the American dream came true

From the Blog PkColumnist.com: For whom the American dream came true - One night, many years ago, Dr Leon Smith got a phone call from a very worried man. "My wife and the mother of my children is seriously sick and nobody knows what's wrong with her. Can you take a look at her?" requested the caller. Dr Smith said he'd be over right away. "You mean just now?" asked the surprised caller, wondering if he had heard the doctor right. It was late, after all. Half an hour later, the doctor arrived. The patient was diagnosed with an infectious disease, which if not treated in time could have been fatal. The caller was Senator Frank Lautenberg, America's oldest sitting senator. He will have served the US for 30 full years when he retires in 2012. He has a train station named after him in New Jersey, a unique honour for a living lawmaker. America is not given to naming its buildings and roads after living legends. Such honours are the exclusive preserve of presidents who died years and years ago. As Lautenberg, 86, stood at the podium to honour his longtime friend Leon Smith and to thank him for saving the life of "my wife and the mother of my children", last week, he drew a parallel between himself and Smith. "Like Leon, I am the son of immigrant parents. I too lost my father at an early age. My mother had to work to help raise me and my sister," he said. "But that's where the similarity ends. I was not as bright as Leon who is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Georgetown Medical School, later completing post-doctoral fellowships at Yale and Harvard," added the senator modestly. Earlier Leon Smith, 84, talked about his parents who had arrived from Lebanon. "My father died very young and my mother and sisters worked to put me through medical school," he said. "My father should not have died so young… I was determined to become a doctor and save lives when I grew up." The phrase 'Only in America' has a special meaning for Senator Frank Lautenberg and Dr Leon Smith. While Lautenberg, son of Polish and Russian immigrants had to work nights and weekends to attend school, Leon Smith specialised in infectious diseases and served inner city hospitals to save the lives of the poor too sick to pay for treatment. Both the men stood tall that night, before a crowd of over 1,000 New Jersey glitterati to talk of how they had realised the "American Dream." Billed as the 'Inaugural Gala' benefitting the Smith Infectious Diseases Foundation, established more than 20 years ago, the audience was mesmerised by the magic touch of Leon Smith as we watched and heard testimony after testimony of patients who said they owed their lives to the doctor. "He healed us," said all. They were ordinary Americans, mostly poor. Smith had so much talent that he could have become a millionaire, instead he chose to serve the poor in inner cities, people who don't stand a chance of survival when hit by a deadly disease. Peggy, his longtime wife and Leon established the first free medical clinic in Newark, New Jersey, an area mostly inhabited by African-Americans. The Foundation has funded ongoing research elsewhere and established the first viral diagnostic lab in New Jersey and one of the largest HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C clinics in the US. Voted by his peers as one of the "best doctors in America," Leon Smith, in his 40 years of service, has dedicated his life to diagnosing and treating people and at the same time looking for breakthroughs to prevent the spread of deadly illnesses. "I have five children. Four out of them are doctors. And I am the proud grandfather of 15 grandchildren, the eldest of whom, is standing before you. She has been accepted at the medical school at Georgetown, my alma mater, next year." Here are the takeaways, lessons learnt, as Americans like to call it, that I carried with me after coming home that night: Nowhere but in America can a son/daughter of a blue colour worker dream of becoming a famous senator or a famous doctor; nowhere but in America can a son/daughter of illiterate immigrants make it to Ivy League schools; nowhere but in America can a person, born and bred elsewhere, be provided equal opportunity to rise and rise; nowhere but in America can people in their 80s still hold important jobs and do exciting research; nowhere but in America do people think of giving back to the community if they have achieved success and wealth; nowhere but in America do people leave behind a legacy worth emulating. Indeed, for some the American Dream does come true. But not without hard work. Of course, there will be exceptions to report from other countries, but hey, there are exceptions only. . Dirty electricity

From the Blog PkColumnist.com: Dirty electricity - WE now know that Karkey Karadeniz Elektrik Uretin (KKEU), a Turkish power company, has anchored a barge-mounted power station in the Korangi Creek, connecting it to KESC's thermal powerhouse transmission lines to deliver 220MW into the starved electricity network (the powerless awam expect much from the bijli ka jehaz). At the inauguration ceremony of this furnace oil-guzzling smoke-belching mini-monster, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, our 'knowledgeable' minister for water and power, informed us that the "ship-borne system is a state-of-the-art power plant to provide electricity to Karachi". He is only partly right: although the barge has been rented for five years by Lakhra Power Generation Company (GENCO-IV) and its electricity is being 'wheeled' into the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC)/Pepco's nationwide system, its output will be utilised by the KESC as a low-loss part of the 650MW supply to be provided by Wapda. With proper relaying, this output will remain available to KESC even if the inter-tie to Wapda drops off. On Nov 24, this newspaper reported that KESC will pay some Rs9/kWh to Wapda/NTDC, with KKEU's sale price to Wapda/NTDC being around Rs16/kWh. In its January 2010 rental power review report, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) found "the Rental Service Agreements (i) are weak in their legal structure; (ii) do not balance the risk sharing between the seller and buyer; and (iii) have many inconsistencies". It also calculated that KKEU had the highest cost among the 12 furnace-oil rental power plants reviewed. What Raja Pervaiz Ashraf did not mention was that the barge will horrendously pollute the habitations, air and sea around Karachi. In mid-March 2010, my advisor on environmental engineering affairs, Shehri's Roland deSouza, attended a public hearing held by the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) on the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report submitted by KKEU and emerged sceptical. This report essentially stated that whatever environmental problems emerged during the operation would be studied/tackled by KKEU as they occurred. This is unbelievable. If such a procedure is to be accepted for scrutiny by EIAs, then Sepa's NOCs and public hearings are meaningless. As per Section 9 of the Review of IEE & EIA Regulations 2000, Sepa must conduct a "preliminary scrutiny" to confirm that the EIA is complete for purposes of initiation of the review. It obviously was not. Had it been, the agency should have insisted that all environmental issues be assessed in detail, technical studies and accurate analyses be conducted, and detailed mitigation measures finalised in advance. For instance, without engineering studies, KKEU vaguely stated that plant noise would be tackled with acoustic enclosures only "if the noise levels exceed the National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) guideline values". An unrealistic figure of 85dB(A) was quoted as the standard, although residential areas (e.g., Ibrahim Hyderi Goth) should not be subjected to more than 45dB(A) of sound at night. Further, KKEU loosely promised that seawater temperature-rise thermal-plume modelling of their once-through cooling-system would be undertaken "in case the temperature difference is found to be beyond the NEQS". The NEQS prohibit the discharge into the sea of any effluent (without regard to concentration of pollutants or temperature-rise) within 10 miles of the mangroves (in Korangi Creek). ADB reported in 2006 that the average temperature rise of the sea cooling water at KESC's Korangi power-house was 7Ú°C (exceeding the maximum 3Ú°C allowable). Excessive heat from the KKEU barge will exacerbate this situation, and further adversely affect marine life and the livelihood of fishermen in adjacent goths. No details were provided of the complex treatment/disposal required for the contaminated wastewater generated from washing the furnace-oil or from other hazardous chemicals. (Polluters in Pakistan tend to isolate themselves from this process by using sub-contractors who, after bribing officials, remove contaminated waste for remote dumping.) With the burning of dirty furnace oil, bereft of de-sulphurisation equipment, increase in air-pollution is a major concern in the already degraded air shed around the KESC power house. The coloured contour maps generated by KKEU's air-dispersion modelling fraudulently show the prevailing wind as coming from the northwest rather than the southwest. Thus, the deposition of pollutants from the barge is stated to be over the Korangi Creek rather than onshore onto the thickly populated areas of Ibrahim Haidery Goth and Korangi Township. The EIA report states that the alternative Chinna Creek and Bin Qasim sites were not considered suitable as habitations existing close to the barge locations would be adversely affected by the power plant. How then is the Korangi location, with millions of people downwind within a few kilometres, acceptable? Myriad other details and mitigation measures that should have been spelled out and examined by Sepa and the public have not been addressed. A perusal of the pathetically drafted, conditional NOC issued by Sepa in April makes incredulous reading. It vaguely and generally states that the project proponent "shall do" this or "shall do" that; that standards of the World Bank "shall be observed"; that emergency/contingency plans shall be made; and equally meaningless directions. For example: "Temperature, TSS and pH of all effluents and gases being released will be controlled through effective equipment and technologies." Is it not the function of Sepa and the public hearing to evaluate and approve the effectiveness of the proposed mitigation measures? Does the government realise that degradation of the environment at the World Bank-determined rate of six per cent of GDP is far greater than the three to 3.5 per cent increase in GDP being brought about by 'economic development' with dirty electricity? Do they expect the impotent environment ministry or the corrupt EPAs to rectify this? Are we not on the path to ecological suicide? . Read Full PostComments

Shiela vs Loveena

From the Blog Speak Your Mind!!!: Shiela vs Loveena - Katrina (Sheila) Kaif might be flying high with her latest item number rocking the charts…but she’s sure going to face some tough competition from another ‘hottie’ this Christmas eve.  We’re talking about Loveena – the Miss Toonpur! ‘Loveena’ is the most popular damsel in Toonpur – she’s hot, sexy and can drive you crazy with her ‘adaas’. And she is a diehard romantic who falls in love with  Ajay Devgan  the moment she sets her eyes on him! Loveena lives and breathes romance, flirting openly with Ajay much to the chagrin of his wife Kajol, who warns Ajay to stay away from Loveena.  So this 24th December, while on one hand we have  Katrina Kaif  dancing on ‘Sheila Ki Jawani’ in  TEES MAR KHAN , there’s Loveena on the other side matching her steps with Ajay Devgn on the groovy number ‘Let’s go to Toonpur’ from Kireet Khurana’s  TOONPUR KA SUPERRHERO , India’s first live animation film.  Well, we’ll surely be whistling for Loveena! Star Cast Ajay Devgn …… Aditya Kajol …… Priya Tanuja …… Special Appearance Sanjay Mishra …… Shyam Delnaz Paul …… Ramola Mukesh Tiwari …… Inspector Kitkite Viveck Vaswani …… P.K. Dhoot Raza Murad …… Special Appearance Shereveer Vakil Amey Pandya …… Kabeer . Read Full PostComments

Sonu's free musical workshop & much more

From the Blog Speak Your Mind!!!: Sonu's free musical workshop & much more - Singer Sonu Niigaam has revealed his desire to organise a musical workshop for fans through a series of posts on Facebook. “How many of you would be interested to attend a live musical workshop to be conducted by me in Mumbai, will 3rd December be suitable for you?”: Niigaam posted on Facebook. “It will be a free workshop open to all… we’ll do it only if we have the appropriate strength, location and time we’ll inform you here and the date can be worked out based on majority and our convenience.” The singer was overwhelmed by the response from his fans. “Everyone, the response is too overwhelming. I thought this is something that I’ll be able to handle myself with my team. But I guess I’ll have to take the assistance of some professional friends to manage so many people and a proper venue,” the singer posted. Abhishek Bachchan says he is glad that he didn’t have to look down at Deepika Padukone while shooting Ashutosh Gowariker’s ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey’, because she is the “tallest” actress to have appeared with him till date. “Deepika (who is 5′ 9″) is the tallest of the ladies I have worked with. I could finally look at my co-actress in the eyes and didn’t have to look down upon her. It was really nice and tall working with her,” Abhishek, who is 6′ 3″, told reporters in Delhi. Congrats Abhishek! Never knew that a height of person should be such a big deal that Abhishek will be making statements. But I guess he doesn’t have to take a U-turn after saying this. Responding to a query regarding rumours that Deepika has turned down an offer to work with Shahid Kapoor due to height issues, Deepika said: “If that was the case, I won’t be doing any movies at all!” “If actors suit the character and the film, it doesn’t matter if the girl is taller than the guy…So really, if directors start getting bothered by my height, I won’t get any film at all.” Freida Pinto accused the media of sensationalizing her comments on Bollywood. “I never said I don’t want to be in Bollywood… Bollywood is like a big celebration. It is wrong to say Bollywood treats women like dolls,” Freida said, when a reporter asked her to clarify her statement to the media earlier, where she had allegedly said she wanted to avoid roles in typical Bollywood films. “The media picks and chooses what people say. There are slots in newspaper which they need to fill with sensation. You put people like us in a tough position,” said Pinto. She also chided the media for equating Bollywood to Indian cinema. “Bollywood is a part of Indian cinema. There are other alternative cinemas in India too,” Freida said. She has also had enough of big budget films – ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and the Woody Allen venture – for the moment and now wants to do “realistic cinema” for a change. “A film has to satisfy you. I don’t want to do that kind of a film again right now. After two big budget films, I am looking at doing more realistic cinema,” Freida said. She said names in cinema like Stephen Spielberg were not a big draw for her and that she would love to work even with debutants who were making films on interesting subjects. . Newcomer Akshay Oberoi

From the Blog Speak Your Mind!!!: Newcomer Akshay Oberoi - Akshay Oberoi is Vivek’s cousin & he is making his debut with Rajshri Productions’ ‘Isi Life Mein.’ Drawing similarities between him and his character, he said: “The character is very similar to the real me, so I really relate to him. In college I was in theatre. I also have the same ideologies in real life. The only difference is that in the film this guy has a temper, but I’m not like that.” Akshay, who has done his Bachelors in theatre from Johns Hopkins University, Maryland, went to Los Angeles to study theatre at the Stella Adler Conservatory. He has also studied theatre under Hollywood actors – John Astin and Sean Astin from ‘Lord of the Rings’. In spite of being a qualified theatre person, Akshay was always clear that his ultimate destination is Hindi films. “My dream has always been films. Although I love theatre I wanted to be in films because I am a great fan of Hindi cinema. But I realised very early that a right training ground for an actor is theatre. It gives you the technical skill of being an actor. It makes you understand emotions and I feel that I made the right choice by taking this path.” . Read Full PostComments

And no one has to agree with me. I’m so sorry to say but the car doesn’t go with Manyata or Sanju Baba. It’s another thing they can afford it. I think this particular car has been abused. I’m glad that it’s not a living thing or it would have given us headaches. And what the hell is Manyata wearing? Isn’t she too old for such chotay chotay dresses? I believe she has insulted the dress as well. I’m sorry but I don’t like people who instigate others against their family. Well I don’t know how authentic this piece of info is, as it has been reported in an Urdu daily, so the chances are that it’s a lie. Anyway it says that Sanju Baba is going out with someone. If & when the report is confirmed, we will do the dissection with full honesty. Sanjay Dutt will also be playing the role Kancha Cheena in Agneepath. Rishi Kapoor has been thrown out of the movie, as he made some statements about Karan Johar which Karan didn’t like. He accused Karan of instigating his guests against his son Ranbir. I'm sure you guys remember how the 2 exes of Ranbir bitched about him on the show. All of that went out of hand. However, Sanju Baba is very excited about his role in Agneepath. Hrithik is one guy who hasn’t said anything about it. But I saw bits & pieces of Guzaarish & he has grown as an artist for sure. No wonder Shahbana Azmi has become his fan. His student in the movie says, ‘Can I give you a hug?” To which he replies, ‘I already have enough attachments.’ And that actually breaks your heart to know that someone hasn’t been able to do anything for 14 long years. We complain about things but some people endure the impossible for so long without even complaining. . Read Full PostComments

Blackberry Kepler 9300 to hit Pakistan Soon

From the Blog ProPakistani: Blackberry Kepler 9300 to hit Pakistan Soon - Blackberry Kepler 9300 to hit Pakistan Soon is a post from: ProPakistani For all Blackberry enthusiasts who were waiting for the Blackberry Torch to appear in Pakistan, considering its high price and some browser issues; unfortunately looks like it will not be appearing in Pakistan officially. However, if you have the money, you can buy it off the market. But for those, like me, who use a Blackberry device and are looking for an affordable upgrade, a new Blackberry handset will be appearing officially in Pakistan in the next two to three months. This handset is a successor to the ever-reliable and affordable Curve 8500 series, and the last variant of Curve to hit our market was the Blackberry Gemini 8520, available in the market and with cellular operators for about 22,000/- to 25.000/- PKR. As is the norm with all new Blackberry handsets, the Kepler will feature a trackpad instead of the traditional trackball (which used to get dirty and had a lot of issues). The basic layout for the handset is the same as the Gemini, and fits snugly in the hand. Some cosmetic differences will be the chrome lining on the edge of the handsets and a better keypad. Another upgrade is the Wi-Fi option, which is really useful considering almost everyone is using wireless internet at home, and it is also available at cafes, airports as well as other landmarks. The operating system in use will be the latest 5.0 upgradeable (hopefully we will get it with the latest OS). Another upgrade will be the onboard RAM which will be 256 MB, instead of 128 MB. All other features such as layout, buttons, standard multimedia options and shortcut keys will be same with the screen size being 320 x 240 pixels (TFT 65K colors). The camera in the handset will be a standard 2.0 MP which may put off camera fans and there won't be a flash. Battery time will be around 4 – 5 hours during talk time and upto 350 hours to 450 hours during standby (expected). The Blackberry Kepler is a traditional business handset (boring yet efficient) more suited for professionals, who want an affordable device (not recommended for multimedia and iphone enthusiasts). It is expected to be priced between Gemini (8520) and Javelin (8900), the price is to range between 28,000/- to 32,000/- PKR. In this price range, I say it is a good option, unfortunately no memory card is expected in the package.
